營養(yǎng)菌絲又名基內(nèi)菌絲，色淺，較細(xì)，具有吸收營養(yǎng)和排泄代謝廢物的功能；氣生菌絲是顏色較深，直徑較粗的分枝菌絲；氣生菌絲成熟分化成孢子絲，孢子絲再形成分生孢子。孢子絲和孢子的形態(tài)、顏色因種而異，是分種的主要識別性狀之一。已報道的有千余種，主要分布于土壤中。已知放線菌所產(chǎn)抗生素的90%由本屬產(chǎn)生。根據(jù)氣生菌絲（孢子堆）的顏色、基內(nèi)菌絲的顏色、可溶性色素、孢子絲的形狀、孢子的形狀和表面結(jié)構(gòu)等特征，將本屬分為14個種組，每個種組又包括許多不同的種，以此做為鏈霉菌屬各種的鑒定和尋找新的抗生素產(chǎn)生菌的依據(jù)。主要代表如產(chǎn)生鏈霉素的灰色鏈霉菌。 菌絲纖細(xì)、無隔、多核、分枝，革蘭氏陽性，菌絲體發(fā)達(dá)，分化成基內(nèi)菌絲和氣生菌絲，后者成熟后發(fā)育成孢子絲，其形態(tài)多樣(直、波曲、螺旋、輪生)，可裂生大量分生孢子進(jìn)行散播、繁殖。
