嗜血桿菌與肺炎鏈球菌都能在人類的上呼吸系統(tǒng)中發(fā)現(xiàn)。一項(xiàng)有關(guān)它們之間的競爭研究指出，在培養(yǎng)基內(nèi)，肺炎鏈球菌能以過氧化氫攻擊流感嗜血桿菌及能排除在表面流感嗜血桿菌生存所需的分子。
當(dāng)兩種細(xì)菌一同在鼻腔內(nèi)時(shí)，兩星期之內(nèi)，只有流感嗜血桿菌能夠生存。當(dāng)兩種細(xì)菌分別地放在鼻腔內(nèi)時(shí)，兩者皆能生存。使實(shí)驗(yàn)鼠的上呼吸組織暴露于兩種細(xì)菌時(shí)，發(fā)現(xiàn)有格外大量的中性粒細(xì)胞。當(dāng)實(shí)驗(yàn)鼠只是暴露于其中一種細(xì)菌時(shí)，則不會出現(xiàn)這些細(xì)胞。
實(shí)驗(yàn)顯示，接觸過嗜血桿菌死菌的中性粒細(xì)胞對肺炎鏈球菌會強(qiáng)烈攻擊，而未接觸過流感嗜血桿菌死菌的中性粒細(xì)胞的這種攻擊則較不會這么強(qiáng)烈。接觸流感嗜血桿菌死菌，卻不會對流感嗜血桿菌活菌有所影響。這種現(xiàn)象有兩種可能性：
當(dāng)嗜血桿菌被肺炎鏈球菌攻擊時(shí)，引發(fā)了免疫系統(tǒng)攻擊肺炎鏈球菌。
兩種細(xì)菌的結(jié)合引發(fā)了只有其中一種細(xì)菌存在所不會引發(fā)的免疫系統(tǒng)警報(bào)。
至于為何流感嗜血桿菌會不受免疫系統(tǒng)的影響則不得而知。
